The Heart and Soul of Small Business - It’s Hard, But Oh So Rewarding!
As Chris and I got up this morning, we took a deep breath and looked at each other, knowing that we needed a change. We grabbed our Coffee and started talking...

Running a small business is not for the faint of heart. It’s a journey filled with challenges, long hours, and countless obstacles. Yet, for those of us who choose this path, it’s also a journey filled with immense rewards, personal growth, and deep satisfaction. We wear many hats.... From being the CEO, marketer, accountant, and customer service representative to managing inventory and even sweeping the floors, cleaning bins, and hours upon hours of work on our own Homestead Garden, it all falls on our shoulders. There are days when the challenges seem insurmountable, and the pressure can feel overwhelming. We face financial uncertainties, market fluctuations, and the constant need to innovate and adapt. But despite these hurdles, we persevere. Why? We believe in our vision, in our holistic and organic approach to insect breeding, what we do, and, most of all, the value we bring to the insect breeding community and that it brings to us!
That said, the rewards of owning a small business are not always measured in dollars and cents, certainly, they are part of it after all, we all have to make a living, but the most important thing for us is that they are found in the relationships we build with our customers, the joy of seeing our ideas come to life. Each small victory, be it a satisfied customer, a successful shipment, or a positive review, fills our hearts with gratitude and motivates us to keep going. We become more resilient, resourceful, and adaptive. We learn to celebrate the little things and find joy in the journey, not just the destination, and we can confidently say... it has been an amazing journey for us!
We continue because we love what we do. We cherish the freedom to create on our own terms, the ability to make a difference, and the opportunity to turn our passion into a livelihood. The connection we forge with our customers and the support we receive from our customers is a testament to the hard work and dedication we pour into our business. We have been asked to attend College Classes and speak to classes of eager animal enthusiasts about what we've learned. Universities share their research with us, and we celebrate when their experiments coincide with our own experiences and are astonished by the new things we learn in that process. Being Roach Breeders has enriched our lives in so many different ways!
In the end, it’s the love, passion, and determination that fuel our entrepreneurial spirit. Owning a small business is hard, but it’s also one of the most rewarding experiences one can have. We wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.
This brings me to my original purpose for writing this post...
At the heart of our business is a deep commitment to our customers. We know that many pet owners face financial challenges, and we want to ensure that everyone has access to nutritious and high-quality feeder insects without breaking the bank. Through diligently Homesteading and continuing to grow a good chunk of our own things to feed our Roaches, we are now able to lower the food cost that it takes to feed the little chow hounds. By lowering our prices, we hope to make it easier for you to provide the best for your beloved pets because we believe that every pet deserves the best care possible, and that includes the food they eat. This price reduction is our way of saying "thank you" for your continued support and for choosing us as your trusted source of Discoid Roaches.
And as we reach the end of our morning cuppa Joe, we want to thank everyone who supports our small business. Your patronage means more than you know!
